Wintertips
The days are getting shorter and the boating season is coming to an end. Time to get your boat ready for winter! Whether you store your boat in storage or leave it in the water during the winter months, proper maintenance prevents damage and ensures that you can set sail again without any worries in the spring.
In this newsarticle, we provide practical tips for both situations.

Is your boat going into winter storage?
Keep these points in mind:
Preserving the engine:
Flush the engine with clean water and use antifreeze. Don't forget to replace the oil and fuel filters and fill or empty the tank (depending on the type of engine).
Empty water tanks and pipes:
Drain all tanks, pipes and the toilet thoroughly and rinse them with antifreeze to prevent frost damage.
Disconnect and store batteries:
Fully charge batteries, disconnect them and store them in a dry, frost-free place. Check the charge regularly.
Cleaning and ventilation:
Clean the boat thoroughly, inside and out. Ensure adequate ventilation to prevent mould growth. For example, place moisture absorbers in the boat.
Remove sails and cushions:
Store sails, cushions and other loose items in a dry, frost-free place.

Leaving your boat in the water?
This is important:
Check the drainage and bilge pumps:
Ensure that the deck drains are not blocked and test the automatic bilge pump. In the event of a power failure, it must also be possible to pump out water manually.
Use antifreeze where necessary:
As with boats in storage: protect your engine and pipes with antifreeze.
Regular checks:
Check your boat regularly during the winter for leaks, damage or loose lines.
Ensure good cover:
A sturdy winter tenta or tarpaulin protects against rain, snow and dirt. Make sure that the tarpaulin is securely fastened and cannot form pockets of water.
Ensure sufficient lines and fenders:
Storms often come unexpectedly. Provide extra mooring lines and fenders and check the knots regularly.
